Although it’s against the whole concept of being a gaming writer, I have done everything in my power to avoid Death Stranding since it’s release.. The game’s story is intended to be a surprise to the player and you’re not supposed to figure it out until part way through, so I wanted to experience it properly. I would suggest doing this too if you can.
I’m not too far into the story yet but I can’t help plan my days around making time to play more. With massive amounts of cut scenes, it really feels like watching an amazing movie that you will get sucked into very quickly.
I’ll be the first to admit that it won’t be a game that everyone enjoys. It can be extremely tedious and your decisions will impact you more than they would in other games. Even something as small as carrying items is altered to be a task where you’ll have to position things in your backpack in order to best balance yourself. If you find yourself losing balance, grabbing the left or right strap on your backpack will balance you. The game quickly begins to feel like you’re actually moving across the landscape yourself.
Based on the small portion of the game that I have played so far I would highly suggest everyone try out Death Stranding. Being so unusual compared to other games I can’t even say “If you like X than you’ll also like this”. It’s something you’ll have to try out and see for yourself.
TLDR
Death Stranding is highly unusual with an immense amount of story to it. Feeling more like a playable movie than a video game it will definitely draw you in, whether you’re playing or just watching someone else play.
