Katamari Damacy Reroll review

Most games that I remember from years past are the classics known for their great game play. I can confidently say that’s not the case for this game. The crazy nature of this game, from animation to concept, is definitely what has kept it in my mind all these years.

Katamari Damacy Reroll is one of those games that for some reason I could never get out of my head. I only played it once many years ago when I was visiting a friend who had a hacked Wii and had a ton of strange games from Japan. So when I stumbled across it in EBGames’ used game section I was extremely excited! I didn’t even realize that it had come out for the Switch!

If that opening scene wasn’t enough of a hint at how ridiculous the game can be just play a little and you’ll soon realize that the opening scene is a perfect representation of the whole game.

The whole point of the game is that your father, the creator of the universe, has destroyed all the stars in the sky. In order to get them back you need to roll up larger Katamari’s (the ball that you’re rolling) that are turned into stars IF you meet the requirements.

While the storyline of the game may not be the most captivating thing I’ve played, the game play itself did manage to keep my attention the whole way through. The breakdown of each level is basically just to roll a big enough Katamari (ball) to pass in the allotted timeframe. That being said each level does offer a new set of challenges whether it’s the location, environment or starting size. There was a couple of levels that I got stuck on and found myself thinking about how I can get past them even while trying to sleep.

Even with the struggles I did come across completing this game it still took me under a week to complete the whole thing. For a full priced game that would not be ok in my books but luckily it only cost about a third of what most games on Nintendo Switch tend to run. That plus the fact that I can say without question that I will play it more in the future makes me feel content with the purchase. Especially since there is a multiplayer mode that I have yet to delve into. (it appears to be a “get bigger than your opponent first to roll them into your Katamari).

So, with trying to make sure I take out my personal memories around the game, I think it’s something worth picking up.

Would I suggest paying more than $30 for it? Probably not. Mainly because of how short the game is more than anything really. It’s a fantastic time waster that is super easy to pick up and pause whenever. Overall I wouldn’t say go hunting for it but if you happen to find it in store make sure you grab it.

Happy Gaming!
