Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Throwback

So a review of this game would be kinda absolutely useless based on the age of it. It’s been out forever so instead it lands as a Throwback to all those old games that bring back wonderful childhood memories.

Much like Super Mario 64, I recall playing Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 obsessively as a child. I honestly remember thinking “wow those people look so real!” Ya I can’t believe there was any point that I actually believed that now but at the time I was super impressed.

Although there’s a lot of fun to be had in making your own roller coasters it does wear off pretty quickly. Maybe it’s just that the novelty of being able to create your own things in a game has become more of a normal thing that it can just be frustrating now. Maybe it’s the fact that even if you’re looking to reach certain statistics out of your coaster you won’t have any idea how it ranks until it is done. No matter what it is, it’s just a lot simpler to build one of the designs that you can choose from instead of taking the possible hours to create one yourself.

That being said it removes a lot of the difficulties in the game that make the missions fun. Instead of trying to create the perfect park I was able to easily see what the tasks were to get gold status on the inspection. From there all I had to do was pick the right coaster and plop it down then wait for the inspector to come a few months down the line. The latest mission that I did I was able to meet all the requirements about ten minutes in. It took me longer to build the pathways than it did to complete the tasks.

Not to say that this is a bad game but just that it doesn’t hold up to the test of time like some of our other Throwback games (looking at your Mario 64). I would play the hell out of a modern version of the game but I’ll be the first to admit that this old version takes effort to keep myself interested in.
