Throw Back Gaming | Spore

One of the classic games of my youth, Spore. I find about once a year I get the urge to stay up the game again and work my way through the evolutionary track and try to fight my way to the center of the universe.

If you’ve never heard of the game you might want to look into it. It starts off with you being a single cell organism floating through the water “evolving” by collecting different evolution traits and gaining experience. You can be a plant eater working your way through the floating algae or attacking other creatures and using their rooting bodies as a good source. How you act in each stage unlocks bonuses in future stages.

Eventually work your way onto land and continue down the same way. Make friends or enemies to gain experience and collect new traits. Expand and evolve to making tribes, cities and eventually taking over the whole planet as you start your space journey.

This is where the game starts to have some failings in my opinion. You can zoom down into planet level and see all the plants and animals running around. It’s a very cool aspect of the game except for the fact that most missions require you to do that. On top of that your planets get attacks sometime so you have to work your way back to the planet and zoom in to help them. Constantly zooming in and out becomes frustrating as your Empire grows bigger and bigger.

One of the best parts of this game is the variation the players add to it. Right from the beginning you can customize the physical features of your character with parts designed to give them evolutionary traits. For example a mouth that allows them to be a carnivore. It didn’t stop there though, the mouth didn’t get automatically placed on the creature, you choose exactly where it goes. On the front? On the butt? It’s all up to you! This full creative allowance carries through every evolutionary stage as well as the design of vehicles and spaceships. I may or may not have had a intergalactic spaceship in the design of a giant penis charging from planet to planet.

All in all I would highly suggest trying this game if you’re looking for something to play, it’ll always be one of my favorites.
