Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden | Review Roundup

I honestly only decided to look into this game because of the name. I knew nothing else about it and had never heard anyone mention it. I'm not even sure how that happened..

Well this is an idea that I love, a turn based battle game with a lot of stealth components. In Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden you start off as two characters, Dux (a mutant duck/human) and Bormin (a Pig/human mutant). With humorous conversations and a lot of things to discover, it definitely keeps your interest.

Being both a real-time adventure and a turn based strategy game, mutant year zero really makes you plan things out. From devising where your characters lineup before initiating battle to simply trying to avoid combat by staying out of an enemy's line of sight and sneaking around. Throughout the world you will come across weapons in a very Fallout 4 kind of way. Items that have been constructed together using what was apparently available at the time to craft a weapon that works. Some weapons cause more noise than others, attracting enemies closer to you or perhaps giving you away entirely.

Coming to PC and all consoles except for the switch, there are a number of reviews of the game already. As always these reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt, especially when considering that they aren't for the Nintendo switch if that's the system you're intending to purchase this on.

IGN 7.9/10

"Much like its half-human, half-animal protagonists, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a hybrid. It looks to push the grid-based tactics of games like XCOM 2 and Phantom Doctrine to their next logical step by incorporating stealth and pre-fight planning into the experience. Unlike its counterparts, however, Mutant Year Zero deftly cuts some of the strategy game abstraction by alternating between exploring areas in real-time and the familiar tactical combat that you probably already know and love". - Mike Epstein, IGN.com

GameSpot 9/10

"Mutant Year Zero took me by surprise. When you tap the space bar to switch from the real-time exploration mode to the turn-based tactical mode, it's not considered activating combat. You're not entering into battle. The word “Fight!” doesn't leap out of the centre of the screen. Instead, the space bar is labeled “Ambush” and, while pressing it does indeed initiate a turn-based XCOM-style encounter, the semantics make all the difference."

"Mutant Year Zero’s key addition to the XCOM format is a new take on stealth. And it makes a huge difference. Combat starts either when you purposefully initiate it or if you blunder into an enemy’s awareness radius, which you can make smaller by crouching. This presents an opportunity to twist the encounter to your advantage by scouting the area to find vantage points, and it gives a fantastic sense of involvement in the ensuing fight, because so much results from the situation you set yourself."

Roundup 8.3/10

With a very high average score this game seems like it might turn out to be as good as it looks! Mutant year zero: road to Eden has taken two different mechanics, real time stealth and turn based battle, combining them beautifully. With a lot of enjoyable dialogue and a ton of stuff to go through, this game is an adventure worth taking.
